I enjoyed New Moon and watched it twice in the cinema. The film moves faster and there is more action but unfortunately some of the emotionality is lost in the process. I have watched Twilight lots of times and the emotional intensity gets me every time, in New Moon it didn’t get me when I watched the film the second time.
The change in director makes a big difference, this film is much more commercial, a lot of bare chests to drool over, and brighter colours but some of the edge was lost.
I liked that in this film the Cullens looked more like vampires, I thought they looked to ‘normal’ in the first film. But I didn’t like the wolves, in this day and age they shouldn’t look so much like bad animation, I think more money should have been spend on good animation to make them look more realistic. I was also disppointed how the 3 main Volturi were portrayed, they looked young and strong not as described in the books.
Overall, I think Hardwick got the essence of the books better than the new director but it is still a very enjoyable film. Am not sure though if I will watch the dvd as often as I watched Twilight.
Rating: 4 / 5
The Twilight film was the first time I’d ever heard of Stephanie Meyers book. The craze had passed me by completely. But the film was so good I read all the books and got hooked. The scenes between Bella and Edward in Biology were so real and full of such chemistry that I sat in the cinema smiling my heart out. I don’t think I would have had such a strong reaction if New Moon was my first taste. Everything that worked about the first film is gone; the pale colour scheme, the intense relationship between Bella and Edward, the intimate dialogue that sounded pretty corny but worked because of the way it was delivered and filmed by Hardwicke. Chris Weiz has opted for bright colours and perfect wigs and heartfelt words are said in passing whilst walking down a schoo corridor(?!) If you’re going to say something profound which may sound boarderline nuts, then you need to set it up right and not just say it like it’s an everyday thing. Completely looses it’s intensity and you forget why Bella and Edward are so in love.
That said, the movie was made for the girls and Weiz gives the female fan base plenty to like. Jacob is presented as a real alernative to Edward, the epitome of perfection, and you believe that Bella could want him instead. But the only problem is that Weiz threw away all the intensity of Bella’s relationship with Edward that Hardwicke portrayed so brilliantly, so the real question becomes, why wouldn’t Bella choose Jacob? There are some laugh out load corny moments in this film and you’re not sure if the director is laughing with you or expects you to take it seriously, like the slow close-up on Edward as he recites Romeo and Juliet to a grand swell of classical music, or Alice’s flash forward to see Edward and Bella running in the woods in slow motion, wearing beige linen and a cute fairy-tale dress. Not something Hardwick would have allowed.
The CGI and effects are awesome and thats something that wasn’t done very well in Twilight. It’s a shame that Hardwick couldn’t have directed New Moon but with Weiz as an assistant for the action scenes.
I know some people can’t stand Kirten Stewert as Bella but I think she’s fantastic and totally convincing. Pattison is good but seems to have lost the sizzle that he had in Twilight and all his lines seem restrained and hollow. But that is more the fault of the director. Plus his wardrobe is TERRIBLE! Why is he suddenly dressed like an old man? And is it just me or is his voice different in this one? Lautner is amazing as Jacob and seems to have some star quality to back up his good looks. Alice also comes into her own a bit more in this film, and Anna Kendrick almost steals some scenes as Jessica.
I hope that Eclipse is a bit darker and a bit more sincere in it’s acting. The thing about the Twilight saga is that its about real love and how it feels at 18 to experience it for the first time. Of course most of us grow up, get hurt and get cynical. But Twilight made me remember the joys of being a love-sick teen when everything was amazing and new. Eclipse needs to find the balance between presenting the ridiculous idealisation of that love with the feeling that its completely real, and then add on the amazing action sequences.
New Moon good, but not nearly as good as Twilight.

New moon along with Twilight is a great movie adaptation!
It sticks to the story more or less all the way through just a couple of niggly things that only a big fan of the books would pick up on, this spoilt it a little for me!
It’s rare to find a film which has divided both fans and critics alike but I have to say I though it was amazing. I thought the theme of loss and dispair was a lot more interesting than in Twilight and I think it worked much better without the blue tinge that Hardwicke gave the first 1. Although the make up was a little exagerated I thought it gave the vamps a far more other-worldly quality which was previously lacking.
The reason I’m giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the God awful slo-mo running scene towards the end. Never has a single scene been so close to destroying the entire film. Just cringy. Seriously cringy. You amost feel sorry for Stewart and Pattinson for having to film it.

I’m a fan of the books before the films. The Twilight movie is ok, but I found the changes they made to it annoying, and the build up of Edward and Bella’s romance to be definitely lacking. That said, I loved the atmosphere of the film, and I felt that saved what would otherwise have been a disappointment (as well as Rob, he’s pretty enough to nearly save it on his own tbh!).
New Moon is my favourite book of the saga, and when I heard they were making the film more true to the book this time I was optimistic, but ultimately disappointed. Although it is true to the book, the most important and intense scenes of Edward and Bella together did not appear, replaced by fight scenes that did not appear in the book, and felt out of place.
This film, lacking the atmosphere of Twilight, lacks the most important thing for me, the soul of the books. I don’t really buy Kristen Stewart as Bella, she’s too confident, and the shooting of the film was too bright and “All American” to really fit. I found myself aching for the feel of Twilight, if only for some emotion.
I will still buy this DVD, but for the most part to ogle Robert Pattinson, sexy as ever as Edward, even if the acting skils he demonstrates in some of his other work are not so obvious in this film.
