Man, I love those things, especially the P-51. Nice n portable alternative to conventional openers.

i have a faberware just like that one, and after about a year the twist handle thing stripped and it just spins , id defiantly recommend an old metal can opener or those p-38’s , the less moving parts the better,

Used knives to open food cans when I was in the
Navy , or the can opener on navy issue pocket knife, Didn’t know these little things existed.

I got 100 “John Wayne’s” online for about $20.00. They actually have U.S. stamped on them. Used to get them in C-Rats when I was in the Corps. Make great gifts.

@oevzA1oL That would have been very creative. Thanks for the inspiration. Maybe next time.

  19. oevzA1oL says:

If you do a P-38 review in the future could you do in a ditch with gunfire in the background? That would be authentic :)

Hi Sootch. I gotta tell ya that in the 60’s after we opened rations with our Kabar, we just had to PUSH a little harder when we used it for what it was really intended for. The real issue was making sure ya washed it off good before opening another ration tin.

  21. LongRangeRifle says:

hehe, the joke goes that you know you’re a survivalist when your wife wears these as earrings :p

Funny, I just picked a few of these up (Canadian Coghlan’s brand) and now you make a video about it.

Very good video Sootch, very informative, I like it. 5/5

  23. irishmankentuckian says:

I’ve always wondered how those things work.

  24. robdelcastillo says:

my mom has a p-38 that has been used in vietnam.. kind of a souvenir from a friend.
the one your using looks like thin steel unlike the old ones that are very heavy duty..

  25. MrRotoFire says:

I wish more people actually washed their can openers. You ever notice how nasty rusted etc. they get.
