First out, where have you been over the last 10+ years. I know this subject has been talked about frequently on various TV programs, such as Discovery.
The short answer, additional problems with global warming, and weather control are the major factor areas for the continual deforestation of the Amazon basin.
Tree removal, and charcoal making are 2 primary activities to stop in the region. These 2 alone would stop the largest issues in that region. The consequences, it is now disrupting our weather, world wide. More than that, go search it out on Google and other resources for information.

Some of us believe the destruction of forests has a much greater effect on global climate than human caused emmisions.

because if no one protected the rainforest it would all be chopped down, all the plants and animals would be wiped out and i wouldnt like to say what it would do globally!
