Peace Sells..But Who’s Buy [DVD AUDIO]

After being booted from Metallica in 1983, Dave Mustaine put together his own band, Megadeth, and two years later released the mediocre Killing Is My Business … And Business Is Good. At the time, it seemed clear who the real genius in Metallica was, despite Mustaine’s claims to the contrary. But a year later, when Megadeth unravelled Peace Sells … But Who’s Buying, Mustaine’s boasting took on new relevance. Despite some rather inane lyrics, the disc is one of the most powerful and contagious

This DVD documents the antics of the Reverend Billy and his 37 or so strong ‘Church of Stop Shopping Gospel Choir’ (no, really) as they embark on their month-long pre-Christmas consumer crush tour of the US in two rather battle-worn eco-friendly bio-desiel buses (witness Billy pray for forgiveness on the morning he is forced to BUY diesel because his own supply froze overnight).

Although the Reverend Billy is essentially a prankster, his message is neverthelss a serious one, which is why I believe he should be taken just as seriously, if not more so, then the evangelical hucksters he models himself upon. America and the rest of the developed world face an inconvenient truth just as threatening as that exposed by Al Gore in his recent documentary, which is that our overconsumption is killing the planet. This is a fact we conveniently choose to ignore, which is why we need Billy and people like him to remind us of out folly.

Here is a man who has truly found his calling, whether it be exorcising cash registers, holding a vigil outside Wal-Mart HQ, exhorting his congregation to cut up their cerdit cards or baptising newborns in the car park of Toys’R'Us.

And yeah though I walk in the valley of the shadow of debt, I will fear no evil, because the reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping Gospel Choir are right there with me. AMEN.

Call it thrash, call it metal, call it whatever you like, this is a classic example of the high standard of musicianship which has largely been present across all Megadeth releases. Quite simply put nothing else sounds like this. It’s totally fresh for it’s time and is a great listen. As the liner notes say “Boycott noise metal”. This has melody and aggression in tandem and shows that Mustaine had managed to recover from his Metallica debacle. Whilst the first album sounded rushed and directionless, from Ellefsons bass intro, this album just takes off. Wonderful guitar playing by Messers Poland and Mustaine in tandem with the tight bass playing of Ellefson and the unique “mantis” style drumming of Samuelson, this album is simply breathtaking in its variety. We have the Hard rocking “Wake Up Dead”, the almost radio friendly title track, and some genuine “progressive metal” within songs like “Black Friday” and “The Conjuring”. Even the cover of “I ain’t Superstitious” is pretty good (even if it sounds a little out place), much better than “These Boots” off the debut album or the woeful “Anarchy in the (UK) USA” off the (in my view, slightly disappointing) “So Far, So Good, So What”. Megadeth’s original lineup for me ranks just behind the Friedman/Menza lineup (as does this album behind “Rust In Peace) but this showcases this lineup at its best

Megadeth. Perhaps the most under-rated heavy metal band ever. I’d gone for years thinking that Metallica were untouchable. Then one day I heard a little CD called Peace Sells.. But Who’s Buying? It changed my persective. It’s MAD. It’s a masterful work of thrash, blistering technical virtuosity, powerful lyrics and allround agression like I’ve never heard before. With highlights like “Peace Sells” and “Wake Up Dead” it truly equals Metallica’s greatest works. Don’t be put off by “Killing Is My Business,” Megadeth’s weaker first albumn. This truly rocks. If all those Garrage fans could hear this, Metal would rise from the ashes and conquer the world once again! By this album today or live a lie!

If ‘Killing is My Business…’ was Mustaines’s parting shot at his former Metallica bandmates, then ‘Peace Sells…’ is his finally showing his teeth to the rest of us.
1986 was the year that Metallica gave us ‘Master of Puppets’, Maiden gave us ‘Somewhere in Time’, and Dave Mustaine finally stopped being a petulant young rock brat and started displaying his remarkable gift for songwriting and ferocious guitar work. Having assembled a band who were not so much musicians as partners in crime, they set about making a name for themselves among the big boys of thrash, which is where they were obviously certain that they belonged. The result was ‘Peace Sells’, which brought a new, saw edged sound to an already exhilerating genre.
Like many of their contemporaries, Megadeth seem to be losing favour lately among many younger rock fans, but if you’re after a piece of real metal history this is a must buy. I dare anybody to listen to ‘The Conjuring’, ‘Good Mourning/Black Friday’ or ‘My Last Words’ and say that this band doesn’t deserve some serious recognition even now. Any self respecting metal fan should – nay, MUST listen to this…

what can i say? you must buy this album! megadeth are much more ‘laid back’ than metallica, daves lyrics are quite hate covered, unlike metallica, james’ lyrics are very serious, daves are a bit more funny, standout tracks have to be ‘wake up dead’ ‘peace sells’ and the very strage for megadeth but gothic(almost) good mourning/ the slayer type ‘black friday’ this album is a classic thrash album, but i think megadeths best albums were in the early 90’s aka:’countdown to extinction’ ‘rust in peace’ and ‘youthanisaia’ another good track on here is the fantastic ‘the conjuring’ i really like daves vocal at the begining, very dry lung.all the solos are great, vocals still shakey, but david ellefson’s pounding bass helps and so does gars drums.just take my advice and get this album!

When I think of Megadeth, I think of Peace Sells… and So Far, So Good… The two albums encapsulate not only the sound but the musical ability at play within the band. Lead by Dave Mustaine, a stalwart of the metal genre, Megadeth released a below average debut album, Killing is my business and Business is Good after he was ejected from Metallica. It always seemed that Megadeth were playing catch up to the mighty Hetfield machine during their long career but what they lacked in quality they made up for in quantity, now with 9 albums safely under their belt. However, in the early years, they gave us classics on par with the Viking-eque Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets. Peace Sells was the first of three classic albums Megadeth have written, the other 2 being So Far… and Rust in Peace. This was the first real ‘thrash’ album I bought and everything about it was fantastic. From the art-work through to the raw, almost bone-like rasping, clanking sound of guitars, Peace Sells is an out and out classic. Wake Up Dead is a bombardment of ripping, chainsaw-like riffs amidst a damn melodic tune. The Conjuring is trademark dark metal with the evil content and grinding riffs, but it delivers beautifully. Peace Sells is probably the most accessible track on the album and is a hint of the musical direction that they take in later years. An anthem for old-skool metal. Devils Island is a rumbling, crashing, claustrophobic beast of a tune. But then comes some solace from the nasty noise. Good Mourning/Black Friday starts with a nice acoustic intro that somehow manages to sound evil anyway. And once Black Friday kicks in proper you will be left with no doubt that Peace Sells is one sick puppy that you just have to keep petting.I am drawn between this album and So Far… for which gets the crown of ultimate classic. I have never been able to make a decision and it’s been over 10 years since I first held it in my grubby, adolescent fingers. I believe the real essence of Megadeth is that, maybe, just maybe, they haven’t produced their truly classic album yet. Seeing as how their style of metal has dropped out of all credibility recently, it may be sadly true that that seminal album will never appear. I cannot look at Peace Sells and So Far the same way as I would Slayer’s Reign in Blood or Metallica’s Master of Puppets because they are clearly playing on a totally different plain altogether. Megadeth have produced three absolute technical masterpieces with Peace Sells, So Far and Rust and there are a handful of classic tracks to choose from, that much is true. However, their recent offerings have been consistent and prolific at best and terribly mediocre at worst. I would say that Megadeth did have the ability to produce a seminal classic metal album but, alas, I believe that their time is long passed. For metal masterpieces now we must look to the new contenders for the metal crown, like Slipknot, System of a Down and (dare I say it?) Linkin Park [Linkin Park only - SOAD and Slipknot are OK]).A quality album that marks a time when heavy metal was just starting to get interesting and moving on from the trademark galloping of Iron Maiden, and more importantly, when Megadeth themselves were starting to get interesting.
