Hey Chris. Thanks for this – real interesting. Could I grab your advice..? EC2 overkill for simple Wordpress websites (FTP/MySQL DB), or a goer?

Struggling to find a better alternative ATM.

  2. pjblabla says:

this is incredible – companies wait ages to setup the DEV, TEST infrastructure before kicking off a project which requires new infrastructure – this is the silver bullet

I’m also looking for ways to try out EC2 free of charge, too. I’m just a developer learning the latest technological developments in Cloud Computing. Is there any way I can try out all these just for the purpose of learning/get a feel of what these stuff look like.

Compare against COLO or Dedicated hosting.. These are virtual servers on a cloud NOT crappy shared hosting… Comparing it to shared hosting is like comparing a Datsun to a Lexus and then complaining the Lexus costs more….

Is there a Way to TESTDRIVE EC2 FREELY for some time ?

  6. lummyal says:

Yeh, I agree. Banter. I don’t like the video show as much.

I definitely agree that your and Bryan’s face-to-face rapport is a huge asset of the show. For my money, Bryan’s opinion and analysis of Linux is the most reasonable and rational of all the bloggers and mainstream pundits. So I’m excited to see what kind of discussions you guys have as news breaks during this year.

  8. TinyGrasshopper says:

I miss the linux discussions that you used to have on the old show. That should be a separate show that you put out where you and bryan just talk about a linux trend for a few minutes and put down your thoughts. A good example would be douchebag linux users for example who write mean letters to people putting out disparaging linux stories.

  9. p1800volvo says:

Uh, R U Serious? Didn’t this all start out as the Linux Action Show, and here you are, promoting Windoze!

You have just lost a lot of respect.

    1. For a server, $0.10 or $0.14/hour (monthly: $72 and $100) is way more than standard hosting for similar hardware.

    2. No mention of how the instance disk is ephemeral (crash = you lose all your data). For persistent data, S3 and EBS do files and block devices, respectively (at $0.15/gig/month). You do mention snapshots but they are in fact mandatory for pro EC2 usage.

For these reasons, EC2 doesn’t compete with standard hosting but it is a fascinating new solution for different situations.

  20. stuntmasterzs says:

Worked it out, you basically use the server as a proxy server and set it in the boxee interface.

  21. jupiterbroadcasting says:

EC2 is specific to Amazon, but Google, Microsoft, and a few others offer something similar. I think EC2 has been around the longest maybe..

  22. jupiterbroadcasting says:

    haha, it just might :)

  23. stuntmasterzs says:

Got a brilliant idea for this, would this allow a uk resident to view hulu if you vpn to the server?

  24. Freespire44 says:

this was very interesting however is E,C2 service an exclusive Amazon service ? or is E,C 2 generic that another company like Over stock.dot com could create and use?
